National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) Spotlight
Did you know that 44% of companies in the US don’t allow remote work? These companies are missing out on a reliable, skilled, and motivated talent pool, people with disabilities. Earlier this year, our Senior Policy Advisor, Matan Koch, moderated a webinar called Presenting the Business Case For Disability Inclusion Within Your Organization. This presentation highlighted the positive contributions that people with disabilities bring to an organization and is an excellent resource for companies looking to recruit from a diverse, underutilized talent pool.
Monthly Employment Update for People with Disabilities
According to the latest National Trends In Disability Employment (nTIDE) report:
- The labor force participation rate for people with disabilities grew from 38.0% in September 2022 to 40.3% in September 2023. This continues the growth from last year in the labor force participation rate for people with disabilities as we work towards closing the gap between workers with and without disabilities. Workers without disabilities increased their labor force participation rate from 77.1% in September 2022 to 77.9% in September 2023.
- The employment-to-population ratio for people with disabilities rose from 34.9% in September 2022 to 37.2% in September 2023. Compared to those without disabilities, the employment-to-population ratio increased slightly from 74.6% to 75.2%.
Unemployment Rate
According to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) Disability Employment Statistics, the unemployment rate of people without a disability held steady at 3.5%, which is within the range of 3-5% deemed healthy by most economists. The unemployment rate of people with disabilities fell from 7.9% in August 2023 to 7.8% in September 2023, which is more than two times higher than that of people without a disability.
