“Heightened”: The Importance of Connections

poster for heightened with the film's main character in front of a lighthouseIn a world where mental health is often stigmatized and misunderstood, the writer and director of “Heightened,” Sara Friedman, takes viewers on a transformative journey. The film, which is part of the 2023 Dances with Films festival, dives into what it is like to live with anxiety and borderline obsessive-compulsive disorder. As we are introduced to Nora, also portrayed by Sara Friedman, we witness the challenges she faces and the pivotal moment that catapults her onto a path of self-discovery.

During a panic attack while taking her Bar exam, the true depth of Nora’s challenges become apparent. She begrudgingly returns to her childhood home in Maine where she confronts a series of mental health struggles that have shaped her life. Amidst the turmoil, she finds solace and hope in unexpected places.

Her court-ordered volunteer work at the state park introduces her to a park ranger, affectionately known as Dusty (Dave Register), who also is battling his own undiagnosed anxiety. This connection ignites Nora’s sense of purpose and inspires her to support Dusty in pursuing his dreams. Together, they navigate a landscape of deep connections, personal aspirations, and coping strategies.

The story deftly contrasts the darker aspects of life with moments of brightness, underlining the importance of relationships in our ongoing battles. Nora’s journey is complicated by the challenging relationship between Dusty and Mitch (portrayed by Mike Mitchell), adding an element of conflict and further deepening the narrative.

Sarah Clarke and Xander Berkeley poignantly portray Nora’s distant parents, Susan and Gordon, who unintentionally contribute to her struggles. Their portrayal highlights the need for open communication and understanding within families dealing with mental health challenges.

“Heightened” maintains a relaxed, dry-humored, yet engaging tone, allowing viewers to immerse themselves in Nora’s world. It prompts us to empathize with her experiences and reflect on the broader topic of how our society addresses (or doesn’t address) mental health. The film breaks down barriers, educates, and fosters understanding. It highlights the significance of human connections as constant anchors in our most trying times. By embracing mental health inclusion, we can create a world where everyone feels seen, heard, and supported.
