Alex Hilke

Alex Hilke is a Public Policy and Employment Apprentice in RespectAbility’s National Leadership Program for Spring 2022. RespectAbility is a national nonprofit organization fighting stigmas and advancing opportunities so that people with disabilities can fully participate in all aspects of community. Hilke’s Apprenticeship was funded by the Fox Family Foundation.

Hilke was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois with Cerebral Palsy, and a cluster diagnosis of lost peripheral vision in his right eye and optic hypertension. He was raised in Ferguson, Missouri before moving to California as a teenager. He earned an Associates’ degree in Liberal Arts at Ohlone Community College, and went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Government at California State University, Sacramento. He is currently completing a Master’s degree in Public Administration at California State University, Dominguez Hills.

Hilke has spent the last 15 years campaigning for different candidates and causes throughout California. In 2012, he was the on the executive board of the California Democratic Party Disability Caucus, earning a PLEO Delegate spot at the 2012 DNC, where he was state delegation whip. In 2018, Hilke was the Data Manager for the California Democratic Party’s Coordinated Campaign. In January of 2022, Hilke was appointed to the Montebello, California Traffic and Safety Committee where he will improve street and sidewalk conditions for people with disabilities.

Hilke approaches policy and politics with an understanding of how issues in transportation, education, the environment, health care, and workforce development uniquely impact people with disabilities. He wants to make the world more accessible and inclusive for people with disabilities through continuing his career in the public sector as a policy specialist and elected official.
