Jessenia Leaphart is a Policy Apprentice in RespectAbility’s National Leadership Program for Fall 2022. RespectAbility is a nonprofit organization fighting stigmas and advancing opportunities so that people with disabilities can fully participate in all aspects of community.

Leaphart is a Champion of Change and honoree of social innovation and civic participation from the Obama Administration. She works in underserved communities to increase access and amplify equity in the areas of education and healthcare. With a B.A. in Psychology from Florida International University, her work has included women and girls, mental health clinics, inmates within the Florida correctional system on death row, and children with disabilities.

A primary caregiver to family members who were at the end of life, a first generation American, born and raised “In The Heights” from Dominican parents, Leaphart is at the intersection of multiple diagnoses as a bisexual woman of color. Having a rare auto-inflammatory disease and experiencing diagnostic odyssey propelled Jessenia to join the great resignation and reset. She wants to advocate for marginalized communities who identify as disabled, having multiple disabilities, caregiver, LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, Latinx, immigrant and/or first generation.

Leaphart actively participates with groups such as The EveryLife Foundation, Rare Disease Diversity Coalition, and the National Organization for Rare Diseases-Florida Rare Action Network. She currently is a member of Policy, Patient and Caregiver workgroups. She hopes to magnify true diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging within governments, municipalities, and corporations, and to increase representation in public and private sectors to augment strengths and diversify talent pools across industries. Leaphart is a true ally, who believes no one should get left behind or feel alone in the society of today and the future of tomorrow. She wants everyone to have a seat at all the tables.
