Daniel Martinez was a Civic Engagement Fellow in RespectAbility’s National Leadership Program for Fall 2021. RespectAbility is a nonprofit organization fighting stigmas and advancing opportunities so that people with disabilities can fully participate in all aspects of community. Martinez’s Fellowship was funded by the Fox Family Foundation.

Martinez is a 31-year-old from Brownsville, TX, who identifies as a blind Chicano advocate, educator, and mentor of people with disabilities. He has a Masters of Education in Special Education from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. He enrolled at the Stephen F. Austin State University to obtain his dual certification in teaching students with visual impairments and instructing orientation and mobility. He has worked on his professional development in non-profit organizations such as the National Federation of the Blind and Mentoring Engaging and Teaching All Students.

Martinez believes in the value of mentoring. In 2018 he was inducted by the Susan M. Daniel Disability Mentoring Hall of Fame for his dedication in programs such as Changing Attitudes Regarding Employment Education and Rehabilitation. Martinez is especially proud of being an NFB-Newsline ambassador and advisor to the National Disability Mentoring Coalition and the American Printing House Career Connect program.

Martinez became a RespectAbility Fellow to find ways to advance opportunities for people with disabilities. He sees himself building a new program to provide rehab training for people with disabilities. He is sure to achieve his goals with the support of his wife and newborn baby.
