Samantha Haas was a Jewish Inclusion Fellow for Spring 2021. RespectAbility is a nonprofit organization fighting stigmas and advancing opportunities so that people with disabilities can fully participate in all aspects of community.

As a Senior Human Services Major with a Concentration in Early Childhood Development and a Minor in Disability Studies at the University of Delaware, Haas has taken many classes that have taught her the importance of being an ally and advocate for those with disabilities. Additionally, she has worked thousands of hours with children with disabilities. These two factors have increased her interest and knowledge on how to be an inclusive member of society. Originally from Potomac, Maryland, Haas decided to go to the University of Delaware as its education program is exceptional. She has worked with many professors to gain a deeper understanding of disabilities and how to incorporate inclusivity into her future classroom. From the time she was in high school, Haas has worked at numerous summer camps that have flourishing inclusion programs, one of which she will continue to work at this summer. Last summer, she worked as a one-on-one supervisor for a camper with numerous disabilities to ensure that her only worry over the summer would be whether she was having enough fun!

Aside from finishing up her course work, Haas is a virtual substitute teacher, Hebrew school teacher and Intern for New Directions Early Head Start of Delaware. Additionally, last summer Haas founded her own summer camp for a group of four families that needed a place to send their children during the pandemic. She budgeted, created, and implemented developmentally appropriate activities for children ages four through ten.

Haas hopes to learn more about inclusion in the Jewish world over the course of her time at RespectAbility. Looking forward, she is unsure of what the future holds for her career but has high hopes that she will be able to impact the lives of many children and families.
