Courtney Murray, Disabilities Resource Coordinator

Courtney Murray is the Disabilities Resource Coordinator for RespectAbility, a nonprofit organization fighting stigmas and advancing opportunities for and with people with disabilities. She was a Communications Fellow in Fall 2019, participating in the leadership program to gain better knowledge and skills to be a more effective advocate for disability inclusion. Now, she helps represent RespectAbility in her role at WorkSource Montgomery. In her current position, Murray focuses on obtaining employment and trainings for people with disabilities.

Murray’s professional experience in the disability field includes work as a full-time communications intern at American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD). At AAPD, she volunteered with the Global Down Syndrome Foundation and organized hundreds of giveaway packages for its gala. She also took part in daily discussions on the progress and setbacks of policies that were affecting people with disabilities. She researched and identified key players in the disability community for the benefit of business operations. Additionally, she worked at American Institutes for Research (AIR) and performed quality control (QC) of assessments for multiple state departments of education. Her work on the Operations team at AIR led to her evaluating the quality of braille assessments.

Murray is from Kensington, Maryland. She attended Howard University and graduated in 2011 with a Bachelors of Arts in Journalism with a concentration in Broadcast News. She minored in Administration of Justice.

Murray is passionate about music. She enjoys listening to most genres. Currently her favorite music streaming service is Sirius XM. Her go-to station on the service is Hip Hop Nation. Music-related television shows she favors are NBC’s The Voice and FOX’s Masked Singer.

Lauren Appelbaum

Lauren Appelbaum is the Vice President, Communications, of RespectAbility, a nonprofit organization fighting stigmas and advancing opportunities for and with people with disabilities, and managing editor of The RespectAbility Report, a publication at the intersection of disability and politics. Previously she was a digital researcher with the NBC News political unit. As an individual with an acquired invisible disability - Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy - she writes about the intersection of disability, employment, Hollywood and politics. From entertainment professionals to presidential campaigns, journalists to philanthropists, she conducts trainings on the why and how to be more inclusive and accessible. Behind the scenes in the entertainment industry, Appelbaum engages decision makers and creatives to improve the quality and number of authentic, diverse and inclusive presentations of people with disabilities on TV and film so audiences can see people with disabilities as vital contributors in America and around the world. She and her team have consulted on projects with Amazon, Disney/ABC Television, NBCUniversal, Netflix, and The Walt Disney Studios, among others. Appelbaum also enriches the pool of disabled talent in Hollywood by nurturing and connecting them to those who can assist with their careers, both on the creative and business sides of the industry. She is the author of The Hollywood Disability Inclusion Toolkit, which was created to help entertainment professionals to be as inclusive of people with disabilities as possible, and the creator of an innovative Lab Program for entertainment professionals with disabilities working behind the camera.
