National Leadership Program, Summer 2017
Marisela Rivera was a Communications Fellow at RespectAbility, where she worked on changing the narrative in Hollywood to ensure accurate and positive cultural media portrayals of people with disabilities. She also contributed to the Born This Way #BTWchat Twitter chats.
Rivera is an Animal Rights and Disabilities Rights advocate. She also is an environmentalist, and hopes to release her own brand of natural products in the near future. In the meantime, she blogs about cruelty-free beauty at lovecaring.wordpress.com, and is in the process of restoring her blog that focuses on disabilities. She also hopes to publish a book within the next five years.
Rivera has experience working with children ages two through 13 as a caretaker for families throughout the Bronx and Manhattan. She also has experience working as a counselor at local community centers. Rivera is an avid WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) fan, blogger, writer, painter, nature lover, makeup enthusiast, napper and wildlife rescuer. She also enjoys singing when no one is listening. Her long-time dream has been to become a professional wrestler where she can use her passion and fame to advocate against discrimination to all living things.
Rivera is a first-generation Latina graduate from The City College of New York with a degree in Communications and a minor in Journalism. She hopes to pursue a Master’s degree in Journalism, and hopes to eventually own an animal sanctuary where animals are given a second chance at life.
